Sunil Dutt Born Balraj Dutt, he worked as an actor, producer, director, and politician in Indian Hindi cinema from June 6, 1928, until May 25, 2005. During the Manmohan Singh administration, he served as the cabinet minister for youth affairs and sports (2004–2005). Sanjay Dutt, his son, is presently a well-known Bollywood actor.

Early Life
Born in 1928 in the village of Khurd in the Jhelum District of Punjab, British India (now a part of Pakistan), Sunil Dutt is a Mohyal Brahmin by caste. His family later settled in Mandoli, a small village on the Yamuna River in the Yamunanagar district of Haryana. He later relocated to Mumbai to pursue his goals. He started an undergraduate degree at Jai Hind College in Mumbai and got employment.
Career
When Sunil Dutt first started in radio, he was a very well-liked announcer on Radio Ceylon’s Hindi Service, which is the oldest radio station in South Asia. He began acting in Hindi movies and made his screen debut in the 1955 picture Railway Platform. He became extremely famous after starring alongside Nargis in the 1957 film Mother India, which he married on March 11, 1958. Dutt portrayed the irritable, short-tempered son of Nargis in the movie. An incident involving a fire occurred on the sets of this movie. It’s thought that Dutt braved the blazing fire to win Nargis’s love.
He had two daughters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt (Anju), and one son, Sanjay Dutt, who is also a successful actor in movies. His daughter Namrata wed Kumar Gaurav, the son of Mother India co-star Rajendra Kumar, who was also a close friend of Sunil Dutt.
One of Bollywood’s biggest stars in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dutt went on to feature in several popular movies, such as Khandaan (1965), Sujata (1959), Sadhna (1958), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), and Padosan (1967). He had great success working with B.R. Chopra on movies like Gumraah (1963), Waqt (1965), and Hamraaz (1967).
As the sole actor in the cast of the one-of-a-kind film Yaadein (1964), he set a sort of record by directing and starring in it. Subsequently, he transitioned into producing the 1968 movie Man Ka Meet, which featured his brother Som Dutt, who didn’t do well in movies. The big-budget period romantic film Reshma Aur Shera (1971), which flopped miserably at the box office, was produced, directed, and starred by him.
He recovered by going on to play the lead roles in popular movies like Shaan (1980), Jaani Dushman (1979), Nagin (1976), and Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye (1974). In the 1970s, he also acted in several Punjabi religious films, including Sat Sri Akal (1977), Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam (1974), and Man Jeete Jag Jeet (1973). In 1981, he ushered in his son Sanjay’s professional career with the hit film Rocky. However, his wife passed away from pancreatic cancer not long after it was published. In honour of his wife, he established the Nargis Dutt Foundation to aid in the treatment of cancer patients.
Just before his passing, he made a comeback to the screen with Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. in 2003. Although they had both appeared in Rocky (1981) and Kshatriya (1993), they had never shared the screen before with his son Sanjay.
He passed away in his sleep at his Bandra, Mumbai, home from a heart attack. His daughter, Priya Dutt, ran for his seat in Parliament and eventually won. She currently represents North West Mumbai as a member of parliament. Ismail Merchant, a well-known film producer known for his Merchant-Ivory productions, passed away at the same time as him.
