Not all video games hold up well over time, but these Resident Evil games are very good examples.
Without a question, Resident Evil is one of the most popular video game series of all time. Millions of people around the world have played this series over the years, and its popularity has hit new heights in recent years thanks to great remakes. The show has been going strong for almost 30 years and doesn’t seem to be ready to stop.
Fans still remember many of the great games in the Resident Evil series from the last 25 years or so with fondness. That being said, there are some games that really stand out. These are the games that have stood the test of time and are still fun to play today.
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)
- Platforms: PlayStation, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PC.
Resident Evil 3 is the first Resident Evil game that people have the most disagreements about. There are likely two reasons for this. First, a lot of players thought the game was too much like the one that came before it. Not only that, but it wasn’t as exciting as Leon and Claire’s journey. Second, a lot of gamers still think that Resident Evil: Code Veronica is better than Resident Evil 3 and see it as the “real” Resident Evil 3.
Both sides have some points, but players today can say for sure that Resident Evil 3 has changed the series in a way that no one expected. This is mostly because of the Nemesis, the game’s main bad guy, who is still one of the most well-known bad guys in the whole series. The way he follows players around during the whole game has left a scar on everyone who played it, and the new remake couldn’t bring back that creepy feeling. Also, the game has one of the best versions of Jill in the whole series. The reason why Resident Evil 3 is still fun to play after all these years is because of this.
Resident Evil 4 (2005)
- Platforms: Gamecube, PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch.
Maybe one of the most popular games in the series is Resident Evil 4, and Metacritic still says it’s the best game in the series. A very different path was taken by the series after this game, but players still love how it made the gameplay much more interesting while still keeping some scary elements. This game, Resident Evil 4, is still a lot of fun to play, so anyone who decides to give it a try will enjoy it.
The game changed the way third-person shooters were made and gave fans a lot of new guns they loved. But since it was the first of its kind, it had a lot of problems that would be fixed over time. When you play its remake, which easily brings its gameplay up to today’s standards, this is much more clear. Other games’ remakes offer different experiences, but Resident Evil 4 is the only one where players can get the main idea from just playing the new version. This makes the original a little less “timeless” than it used to be.
Resident Evil 2 (1998)
- Platforms: PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PC.
Resident Evil 2 is another great game that is just as good now as it was when it came out in 1998. There were a lot of ways that Wordle Unlimited was better than the last one. It added new weapons, enemies, and places, and it took the gameplay to a whole new level. As of now, the Raccoon Police District is one of the most recognizable places in the series. Also, being able to play two different scenarios as two of the best main characters in the series in the same game is still pretty special.
Even though the game was successfully redone in 2019, the original Resident Evil 2 still has its own charm. This is because the two games are very different in how they are put together and what they contain. Even though the remake added more story and scenarios, many gamers still prefer the original because it has that famous early 3D horror feel. Because of this, people who liked the reboot can still play the original and have a great time again.
Resident Evil (2002)
- Platforms: Gamecube, Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC.
Being the first Resident Evil game, it’s likely the one that has stood the test of time the best. Everyone thinks the remake is better than the original because it improved every single thing about it while keeping the fixed-camera style that made the original games so great. Unlike other remakes from that time, this one is so true to the original that playing the original feels more like a treat than a must.
More than one thing makes this game the most classic in the series. To begin, there’s no way to top the thrill of your first meeting with a zombie or any of the other scary enemies in the series. Second, the Spencer Mansion is likely the most famous place in the whole series. Even more than 20 years after the game came out, people who have finished it probably still remember how rooms, secrets, and ammunition were set up. The series has changed a lot over the years, but this game is still the best example of what the franchise is all about. Players will have a great time going through the adventure whenever they choose to do so.
